Read a Picture PowerPoint A set of ten pictures each with a retrieval activity and an imagination activity. For the retrieval activity, children need to look at the picture and then answer retrieval questions about the picture. For the imagination activity, children look at the picture and answer questions involving their imagination. This gives the children the opportunity to explain their thinking. Read a Picture Worksheets A set of 20 worksheets with ten different pictures. Each picture includes a retrieval worksheet including retrieval questions for children to answer and an imagination worksheet which involves one of a range of activities including writing sentences, drawing a picture to answer the question or writing questions. These worksheets can be used as part of guided reading sessions. Aimed at Key Stage 1 children.

A set of 30 English Worksheets covering different areas of the Year 1 English curriculum. These worksheets are suitable for practising and revising the different areas of the curriculum. The worksheets cover – capital letters lower case letters alphabet work adjectives punctuation common exception words sentence writing rhyming words conjunctions compound words plurals adding un adding -er, -est, -ing and -ed. The sheets include useful hints and explanations to support the children in completing the sheets. The English worksheets would be suitable for a home learning activity and require no additional teaching resources. They could also be used in Year 2 to practise the English skills that children learnt in Year 1 or throughout Year 1 to practise skills. Developing Inference Skills A set of nine pictures with guided questions and example sentence openers. The pictures and questions support children to develop inference skills. Each slide on the PowerPoint includes a picture for children to look at and talk about followed by questions that appear one at a time for children to think about. Each question is followed by an example sentence opener to encourage children to answer in full sentences. My class have thoroughly enjoyed being reading detectives and through practise will now provide reasons and explanations for their answers. The PowerPoint can be used as a whole class activity or with small groups during guided reading sessions. Aimed at Early Years and Year 1 children although could also be used to support Year 2 children. Visualisation Activity Sheets A set of 25 Visualisation Activity Sheets. These activity sheets are designed to encourage children to read or listen to sentences and then to visualise what the sentences are trying to convey. The activity sheets encourage children to look or listen for and respond to clues within the text. Visualisation is an important skill for children to develop and will support them in their future reading especially as they move on to longer texts with less pictures. This set of Visualisation Activity Sheets starts with five simple visualisation activities for example I am thinking of a black cat, children then need to visualise and draw a black cat. The activities then move on to visualising where, who and when. The last five activity sheets then require the children to visualise why something is happening. The Visualisation Activity Sheets can be used during guided reading sessions and the children really enjoy creating their own pictures. The sheets also open up opportunities for discussion. These activity sheets are aimed at Early Years and Key Stage 1 children.

Sentence Writing Intervention A sentence writing booster/intervention that can be printed off to create a booklet of activity worksheets for Early Years and Key Stage 1 children who are struggling with writing. The PowerPoint covers five weeks and introduces children to 35 of the 100 high frequency words/hfw. Each week covers reading the focus high frequency words, writing the focus words, cutting and sticking words to make a sentence and then writing a dictated sentence. I have used this activity to encourage children to write sentences with capital letters and full stops and to hold and repeat the sentence in their head. Using Conjunctions Intervention/Booster A sentence writing booster/intervention that can be printed off to create a booklet of activity worksheets for Early Years and Key Stage 1 children who need support to improve their writing. The PowerPoint covers five weeks and introduces children to 34 of the 100 high frequency words/hfw. Each week covers reading the focus high frequency words, writing the focus words, using words to finish a sentence, joining sentences and then writing a sentence including a conjunction. There are 7 or 8 activity sheets for the children to complete each week. I have used this activity to encourage children to improve their sentences using conjunctions. The intervention helps children to gain confidence when they are writing sentences. Aimed at Key Stage 1 children.

Children are then given the opportunity to think of adjectives to describe objects. Children must then identify adjectives in sentences. The lesson includes three differentiated worksheets and a plenary where children have to identify which word is not an adjective. Conjunctions Complete Lesson A complete English lesson for introducing conjunctions. The lesson explains what conjunctions are and when to use them. The lesson focuses on and, but, so and because and demonstrates how to use each of these conjunctions. The lesson is interactive. Children must select the correct conjunction to use in sentences and select the correct ending for sentences and make sure that the sentence makes sense. The lesson includes three sets of differentiated worksheets with three worksheets in each set. There is a plenary at the end of the lesson where children must read a sentence including a conjunction and decide whether the sentence makes sense. Words Instead of Nice Complete Lesson A complete English lesson covering words that can be used instead of nice. The PowerPoint gives children examples of alternative words that they can use for nice and builds a list of alternative words - this final list could then be printed out for the children to use when they are writing. Children are then given a sentence with the word nice in and they have to replace the word nice in the sentence - children could rewrite the sentence on their whiteboards and replace the word nice or could simply write an alternative word for nice. The lesson includes three differentiated worksheets and a plenary where children have to find the odd word out eg amazing, helpful, caring and explain why it is the odd word out. Aimed at Key Stage 1 children.
